  • As a popular health ingredient, grape seed extract contains a high level of proanthocyanidins (PACs). Apart from grape seed, PACs are also present in a wide range of food sources, including peanuts, pine barks, hazelnuts, cinnamon, whole cranberries and apples. Because of similar PACs break down to grape seed, cheaper sources like peanut become a potential substitute for PAC extraction. It is well known that peanut is a very dangerous potential allergen. Up to now, however, there are no standardized criteria for the quality of grape seed extract, which arising a serious concern of the commercial grape seed supplement composition.

  • FDA issues consumer update on undeclared allergens

  • Silver Spring, USA - In a latest consumer update, FDA warns that allergens not listed on the label, referred to as "undeclared allergens," are the leading cause of food recalls. A food product with undeclared allergens is misbranded and can be seized by FDA, but firms generally issue a voluntary recall. FDA is working to reduce these recalls by researching the causes of these errors; working with industry on best practices; and developing new ways to test for the presence of allergens. FDA notes that the five food types most often involved in food allergen recalls were bakery products; snack foods; candy; dairy products and dressings. Recall data show that the use of the wrong label is the most common cause of undeclared allergens and FDA is promoting improved industry awareness and simple changes in the way packages, labels and ingredients are handled and tracked within production facilities to reduce these errors.

  • Las Vegas, USA - Alkemist officially introduced its HPTLC method, which was co-developed with Skyherb, at AHPA’s Botanical Congress during Supplyside West. A simultaneous and rapid high performance thin layer chromatographic method was validated for identification of Peanut Skin adulteration in Grape Seed from plant sample and commercially available dietary supplements. The HPTLC method allowed for the differentiation of Grape Seed and Peanut Skin as raw materials, extracts and finished products. The qualitative method was validated for specificity, repeatability, intermediate precision, limit of detection and robustness. The method was found to be simple, precise and specific for the identification of Grape Seed and its’ adulteration with Peanut Skin.

  • Anji, China - Skyherb began to apply the Food Additive Production License in August, and had been through the preliminary audits by government. The auditors visited Skyherb’s factory to do site certification with employee, documents and facilities on 28th September, and the review result will be checked soon. The full name of Food Additive Production License is National Industrial Products Production Permit. A company gained the License must have conditions as follows: Obtaining valid business license issued by the administrative departments, the scope should cover application products; Obtaining Health Licenses issued by the Health Administrative Department; Products in line with national standards or trade standards; The production equipment, processing equipment, measuring instruments and testing equipment must be guaranteed; Having professional and technical personnel and skilled workers as well as measurement and testing personnel to ensure normal production and product quality; Having a sound and effective quality management system.

  • Washington, D.C., USA - Consumer interest in organic products continues to grow in the U.S., according to a survey from the Organic Trade Association (OTA), Washington, D.C., which found that sales jumped to $35.1 billion in 2013, up 11.5% from the previous year’s $31.5 billion. OTA noted this was the fastest growth rate for organic products in five years, and predicted that growth rates over the next two years would maintain or exceed that of 2013. “The U.S. organic market is experiencing strong expansion, with organic food and farming continuing to gain in popularity. Consumers are making the correlation between what we eat and our health, and that knowledge is spurring heightened consumer interest in organic products,” said Laura Batcha, executive director and CEO of OTA. As demand for organic continues to boom and accessibility to products increases, the industry is facing some critical challenges.
